Newbie question. Can a PSP play UMDs only on external power?

My batteries don't charge anymore. My psp was placed on a bookshelf years ago because my memory stick broke and I did not bother getting a replacement. Bought some UMDs but my PSP turns of immediately when closing the UMD cover and the Psp does not turn on when I insert the UMD before hand. It is a PSP 3000. every UMD does this. Sometimes the games to startup and I think, ooh it is acting normal again, but after that they won't play. Does the PSP need a battery to play games from UMD or is there something else wrong with it?
