NHL Hockey (DOSBOX) performance

Hi, did anybody try to run NHL Hockey (PC DOS version, a.k.a. NHL 93) on NES Classic? I have managed to get it working but the framerate during gameplay is too low (@ 3000 cycles). Speed of the game is OK but it's choppy (compared to my r recollection from playing the game on a 386 and from looking at gameplay videos). Increasing cycles doesn't impact speed but causes audio to stutter. No other settings had any material impact. Thanks in advance for any tips (tried both DOSBOX and DOSBOX SVN cores).
