FM Sound Unit issues with Mega SD

Really wanna try out some FM Sound Unit enhanced Master System games. Booted up the Japanese Phantasy Star but the drum hits are way over distorted. Is this just an issue with the Mega SD, or does the everdrive X7 also do this? Is there anything I can adjust to get the distortion to go away?
