Issue using DS4 on PS3 in game

I’m able to connect the DS4 wirelessly to the PS3 and it works in the XMB menu’s, but when in game there seems to be no response. I tried NFS Most Wanted which I read was compatible. I have my old DS3 controller set to controller 2 and DS4 set to controller 1 as instructed, but when I start the game I need to press ‘start’ on the DS3 controller and the game only responds to the DS3 inputs after I press start. If I try to reassign the controller to have the DS4 as player 2 I get a controller disconnected warning. Am I doing something wrong?
