Game cartridge refuses to work

I figured I'd post this again, even though it's been years since I created a thread regarding this issue.
I bought Pokémon Omega Ruby on day one, full price, and played it thoroughly. I set it aside but picked it back up a year later. I booted it up to an error prompt on-screen, telling me that there's something wrong with the game and to restart the system.
That didn't work at all and I looked up the error online to no avail. I lost hope and forgot about it, setting it aside once more. I picked up again today and this time I'm seeing a different error message, stating that the game cartridge cannot be used - whatever that means.
Is there any way that I could recover the cartridge? I don't want to pay for the game again.
