Steamworld heist question

[Released: 2011] The 3DS is similar to the DS, but is capable of projecting stereoscopic 3D effects without the use of 3D glasses or additional accessories. A redesigned "XL" version of the console was also released.

How does mend work? By the description, I thought it would auto heal each turn but I just did the train mission and the character with mend never healed and I don't see an icon to use it manually.
