Cannot boot into FEL Mode

I've spent several hours now trying to synchronize my SNES Classic without any results, despite following the instructions on Hakchi CE.
While troubleshooting, I've seen mention of the process not working without the cable that comes with the system originally, which I don't seem to have judging by the picture for it provided on Nintendo's website. Could this be an issue when it comes to trying to flash the kernel?
Also, is it possible that Gamestop sold me a fake unit altogether? I'm really hoping this is not the case, but I'm curious after seeing it mentioned often along with this issue.
