Stop using external usb fans or modifying the airflow of the PS3

Post by /p3 »

Like the title says you are not doing anything for your system, the PlayStation 3 was designed on a static pressure based system, if you were to put a fan onto the intake you aren’t doing anything more to it, same goes for an exhaust, if you have your ps3 in a tight space then the only reason you should have an external fan of any kind is if the area was modified so the fan can act as a heat exhaust.

That being said same goes for Case modification via cutting holes, you would change the static pressure but you also change the airflow pattern, so you will see better temps but other components will run much hotter than they should, the main one being the PSU, BD Drive, and ICs on the top of the motherboard.

If you want better cooling for your system just do a repaste and use webman as needed, the 90nm RSX failure point is 70c which is when it becomes soft, setting your max temps at 62c is fine but still overkill, setting them at anything below that is just crazy, you aren’t only wearing your fan out but you are making your system almost unusable with the noise. Typically recommended is setting max temps on webman to 66-68c as the majority of the time the cell hits that threshold before the RSX so the RSX will likely not hit its threshold or anything near it.

Sony engineers knew what they were doing, before anyone says anything it was not up to Sony for the defective 90nm RSX, it was the packager, the packager was partnered with TSMC, Sony didn’t know about the issues and there was a qualification issue, overall just leave your cases alone, don’t use external fans unless it’s to exhaust heat from an enclosed area as they don’t do anything in an open environment, and don’t go overkill on max temp settings.
