PS3 Slim main menu screen has gone berzerk.

Hi all.

I've just set up my PS3 Slim for the first time in years and have the controller connected and charging.

When I turn the PS3 on the menu screen goes bonkers, it goes from right to left on it's own at high speed and stutters very quickly, constantly selects something and asks me if I want to log in/out but won't let me select anything or tries to connect to something on it's own and none of the buttons on the controller appear to work correctly - this I suppose is down to the menu issue so inputs aren't registering.

It reminds me of a stuck button, in this case the left directional button but it's not stuck and I've given it a light clean (no liquids and I haven't opened up the controller)

Does anyone know what might be the issue, is it the controller, the PS3 itself?
