Getting my first dreamcast soon! Any tips?

I know this might be a dumb decision but for my birthday I am getting a dreamcast despite being broke and not being able to afford many games. I've already planned on burning games to disc's but I've heard that compromises some games. If I was to burn sonic adventure 2 for example, how would that be compromised? I would also like to change it's shell and would like some tips for that. As well with modding. For example, I saw some guy modify his disc drive to play DVD roms. Is that real or was I just being trolled
