Is it really bad to unplug or plug-in controllers while the system is powered on?

[Released: 1998] Born out of Sega's darkest hour to decide whether the company stays in the hardware business. Even though it didn't officially last long in the US, it was continued selling in Japan and spawned some great 2D Japanese shooters.

I saw this in a video this mornng, and it has me concerned. I use an ODE, and the only way for me to play Light Gun games (or Typing of the Dead), is to get through the ODE menu with a regular controller, then switch over to the correct one for the game.

Ok, I realize as I type this that my light guns have a d-pad and a few buttons, so maybe they can navigate the ODE menu; I'll have to try that. Still doesn't solve the issue of having to swap out the keyboard for ToTD though.
