Help with program not running correctly on RPI

I built the Magic Storybook from Adafruit but i am having some weird issues that i cant explain and i was hoping someone could help with. When i start the python script in the terminal from the RPI the program does not work, it is slow and the microphone does not hear me. If i SSH into it from my phone and run the script it works perfectly. Anyone know why this might be? The only difference i can see is from SSH i type " sudo -E python story.py " so there is the "-E" that is not used when running it from the terminal. I made it for my daughter and am pretty new to python.
