A Question about Xbox One Game Pass

I got my Xbox one a couple years ago, and due to my brilliant abilities of investigation I have just now found out that I am subscribed to Game Pass. When I enter the Xbox store and click on a game, I am prompted to either use Game Pass to download the game (seemingly for free) or buy the game at a discounted price..with game pass. So when I click on the first prompt, am I getting the game for free or purchasing it?
