I need help to make a game for Gamboy/Gameboy Color

[Released: 1989] The Game Boy is Nintendo's second handheld system following the Game & Watch series. Despite many other technologically superior handheld consoles introduced during its lifetime, the Game Boy was a tremendous success.

I need help to make a game for Gamboy/Gameboy Color

so my friend has been wanting to make a game for his college final, and he had in mind a Gameboy side-scroller, much like Kirby's Dream Land, Castelvania, or Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge, turns out that we have some doubts in terms of tiles arrangement and whatnot, so I would like to ask for some tips, in relation to the size that a background can have in a side-scroller for GB, either in pixels or tiles, or whatever the terminology is, and if its all about putting it on loop or not
