Backward compatibility not working

I have an original non-refurbished Xbox 360 slim and recently bought an official hard drive so I could play an old TES III Morrowind GOTY disc I dug up at a yard sale. The disc is pristine but every time I launch it I get the same error message:
"The game couldn't start. Try downloading the game again.
For more help, visit www.xbox.com/support."
This has left me utterly clueless as the game is not downloaded and have no idea how I would. I have no idea what I don't know. Any help would be hugely appreciated!
