Xbox 360 S making noise and showing red light when hard drive connected

[Released: 2005] As the second console from Microsoft, the XBOX 360 completely sold out upon release in all regions except in Japan. About 33% of all consoles became defective making it the most unreliable console ever created.

Xbox 360 S making noise and showing red light when hard drive connected

As the title says.
My Xbox 360 S (who's been pretty much untouched since Xbone came out) shows a red light and makes a whining/screeching sound when the (default) hard drive is connected. If I remove it the console starts and works without problem.
Is there any way to fix this, preferably without losing everything on the hard drive, or should I just buy a replacement?
