ps2 network adapter

Hi everybody, I just set my ps2 up after 10+ years, I have free mcboot installed, etc. And I also have the network adapter which I plan to mod to SATA. My question though is: how do I even test this network adapter? I plugged it into the back of my ps2, now what? I don't have the hard drive yet, or even the mod required to use a SATA HDD. Can I test it before I go that route? Just so I'm not wasting time if it doesn't work. I want my system to retain network functionality.
