Thoughts on Golgo13 & Mafat Conspiracy?

These 2 have been on my list to play for a while. Pat Contri has expressed being a big fan and James Rolf has done some reviews that hype how unique and adult themed the gameplay is for NES. I also know it is a beloved franchise property in Japan.
I have started Golgo13 multiple times and struggle with getting started. But I also know from reviews that the gameplay changes a lot.
Anyone play through these? What are your thoughts?
