SCPH-5500 Crackling Sound

[Released: 1994] Sony entered into an agreement with Nintendo to develop a CD-ROM attachment, for the Super Nintendo. Due to contractual problems it was never released, and instead, a modified version was introduced by Sony called the PlayStation.

SCPH-5500 Crackling Sound

Post by /playstation »

I am working on a SCPH-5500 which after cleaning and replacing the laser seems to be working -almost- fine. I have noticed an odd behavior. Although it recognizes game discs without issues, once it plays CD video from the disc, the sounds comes noisy and with a lot of crackling. This does not happen with all types of sound, only when console plays sounds coming from video encoded on CD, in game sound effects are fine. I also tested an audio CD and it was just fine.
Wondering where to look for clues. I have seen many "garbled video" repairs on the web that point to bad caps, However, video comes clear... it does not even stutters while playing... only sounds behaves like this.
Any ideas what may be wrong?
