Transfer Save from PS3 to PSX?

I have a PS2 and a PS1 memory card. I'd like to copy saves for some games (FFIX, Legend of Mana, Klonoa) to the memory card so I could either use backups or real discs to play on the PS2. I've tried following tutorials online of how to do this, but so far, testing with FFIX, it doesn't work. With the data copied to the MC, the game says 'Memory Card Check Failed'. With the data removed, it knows there is no save data.
I'll provide details where I can, but what can be going wrong? The data shows up fine in the PS2 browser, with the icon and title and everything. Is there a particular filename it should have, or could something else be missing. Let me know what information I should provide to help.
