Pi 3B+: powering USBs for external devices: how?

Post by /RaspberryPi »

Image hello,
I have an old Pi 3B+, which was working fine until I have swapped OS from SD card to USB2SATA SSD...
Before the swap I only had a USB device attached to the Pi:
  • ZigBee antenna (I am running Home Assistant)
after the swap I have two devices:
  • ZigBee antenna
  • SSD (running OS and application)
Since I have moved the OS on the external USB drive, it seems that the UBSs do not have enough "power" to run both SSD and ZigBee Antenna, hence , to make the Pi startup I need to unplug the ZigBee antenna and boot the pi...
I was aware of the fact that the Pi does not have much "power" on the USB, but I hoped it was ok... I was wrong :(
now, I am faced with the dilemma:
in reality I would need to plug another USB device (Coral.AI) which I already know it is power angry....
how do you "bump up" the USB power in a "clean way" (not just a USB powered hub)?
thank you all
