Compile into.. what exactly

Linux noob here. If I download a c++ project (source from GitHub) and compile it, what’s the output? I mean I know you can specify the name of the output file but if you come back later would you just list all the files in the dir and see which are executable (or grep, etc).
I guess I’m trying to compare to how it would work on Windows, you’d have an .exe which, in most cases should be an obvious build artifact.
