Hoping to get some help on a PS1

When starting my PS1 (chipped) the disc spins to full speed for a second or two, then stops. The PS1 clearly doesn’t load the game.
I’ve bought a new laser head from China and replaced it - still doesn’t work.
I’ve loaned the laser head from my gf’s PS1 (not chipped) - still doesn’t work. It works on her model, but it’s not chipped so my entire catalogue is gathering dust.
Any thoughts on how to fix it? Is adjusting the “pinâ€￾ the next solution?
