LibreOffice word processor runs poorly on Pi 400

LibreOffice word processor runs poorly on Pi 400

I wanted to use a Pi 400 mostly for writing. However, LibreOffice starts chugging as soon as my document gets longer than a few pages, and features like highlights and italics stop working consistently.
Any ideas on what I should do? Are my settings the problem, maybe? Should I install a different word processor? A different OS?
