Raspberry Pi 4 along with another router

Post by /RaspberryPi »

Hey everyone,
A bit of a noob here :).
I have just acquired a Pi 4 8GB and should receive it next week.
I am planning to install OMV on it and then use docker to install Home Assistant and also openwrt or RaspAp.
I already have at home a wireless (let's name it wifi1) and ethernet network, and I don't want to touch it.
I would like to connect my Pi to the existing router directly via ethernet. Both devices will be on a different subnet.
From there, I believe I would have two options :
  1. Route all the traffic to the Pi and disable DHCP on my existing router. That way I would be able to secure my whole network. For wifi-connected devices, do I need to connect directly to the Pi wifi or can I still use the existing wifi connection to my router.
  2. Go into devices configuration and change the subnet every time I would need to be behind a VPN
What do you think? What are my best options?
