Aconcagua English Translation Save Issue

I'm trying to play the v1.0 Aconcagua English translation (link), but when I get to the first automatic save point in the game (by the fire in the mountains) the game freezes. I can't complete the save or move past that point.
Has anyone been able to get past the first save point on Retroarch on the PS Classic? Thanks
