Open media Vault and pihole

Hi all,
So I was trying to set up my pi as a media server, followed some directions on the web, but just couldn't get it right , but then I found media vault which is idiot proof, perfect for me!!, but then I found out I cannot install it because the operating system on the pi is installed with desktop. So my question is if I start all over again and download the iso for media vault on the raspberry, so I can use as a media server, am I still able to install and run the pihole as well?
