Does the original 3DS have the virtual Game Store?

[Released: 2011] The 3DS is similar to the DS, but is capable of projecting stereoscopic 3D effects without the use of 3D glasses or additional accessories. A redesigned "XL" version of the console was also released.

I want to be able to download the Pokemon games that came out on Gameboy but were later released on Nintendo. Anybody know if all the 3DS's support these games or only the newer versions??
Edit: I'm open to getting a 2DS too, so does the virtual games store work on 2DS too?
