Problem with PS2 games on PS3 80BG

So I recently got a hold of a PS3 from a friend who said it wasn't working and I was able to fix it by applying some thermal paste and re-flowing the inner parts. Unfortunately when I wanted to try playing one of my PS2 games that are on the list of games that are said to be compatible the PS3 keeps telling me that I need to plug in an analog controller. I checked the PS3 controllers and all are official controllers and all USB cables are functioning. I tried turning it back or resyncing as others have suggested in other threads but nothing seems to work. Is there something else wrong with the PS3 that I missed because I really want to play my PS2 games on it.
