How to remove the C-clip from the MVSX joystick shaft?

I want to take the shafts out my MVSX sticks but the c clip is pretty difficult to get out for me. It doesn’t look like any clip I’ve seen before and I’m struggling. Don’t want to break anything. Has anybody successfully taken apart the stock MVSX sticks? Not replace the whole thing, just pull them apart.
