How do I make the D-Pad as a joystick for playing arcade games on RetroArch?

How do I make the D-Pad as a joystick for playing arcade games on RetroArch?

While I was playing the arcade version of Aliens vs. Predator on RetroArch, I thought the D-Pad would work but eventually it doesn't. It wouldn't let me select the character and I can't move as I still getting beat up in the game.
