Dithering causes slowdown in MGS?

Post by /psxclassic »

I've posted about my eternal quest to get MGS running as best as possible in Retroboot on the PSC and I just noticed last night that with PEOPS or UNAI cores having Dithering Enabled was occasionally causing major slowdown, especially noticeable looking up close at textures in first person view like when turning around in a vent or crawling under a bed around the DARPA chief's cell. Disabling Dithering immediately fixed any slowdown.
NEON Xtreme seems unaffected, either with it enabled or disabled.
I'm just wondering, is Dithering hardware intensive or something? I noticed during some past Retroboot update that the default changed from Enabled to Disabled, but it still feels necessary for the artistic intent of some games like Silent Hill, Vagrant Story, and MGS makes heavy use of it as well.
