Unable to sign into Xbox Live on 360

I've been wanting to set up my old 360 to play one the older games that aren't backwards compatible, but whenever I go to sign in to Xbox Live, it gets to the last part, gives me an error message and then signs me out of my profile completely. When I test the connection, it shows that there's a service alert, but checking the Xbox Live status website shows everything is working. Anyone else having this issue, and if so, how can I fix it?
