TIL my SNES is PAL '1Chip' - Would someone like to explain what this means?

[Released: 1990] The SNES was the best-selling console of the 16-bit era despite its relatively late start and the fierce competition it faced. The console was able to run some of the first three-dimensional video games on consoles, beginning with Star Fox.

I'm no noob here, I've been playing games since the mid-eightes and have 20 odd consoles hooked up and ret-2-go in my games room.

However, the more technical side of the hobby has never really interested me - but I am curious in this case due to how I came about owning this SNES.
