Want to get back in the scene! Too many questions!!

Just got myself an unopened never refurbished Xbox (not certain but manufacturing date says 2005 so I think it's 1.6) I used to have one of the Mexican 1.0 models. And that old model (should have kept that thing) had a really simple chip in there with Evox, (if I remember correctly?)
Just curious what the preferred method these days are? I'm certainly not worried about anything with the exception of xbmc, those lovely emulators!! and running a back up of my wonderful gaiden black!
Can this all be done with the soft Mod method I've seen? (Via spintercell and the altered Xbox cable, USB?) what about HD upgrade? Are there some links anyone could provide that may encapsulate the possible hardware modifications available based on model?
Oh dear lord I can't wait!
