Could anyone figure out why my light gun was able to work with a plasma tv?

[Released: 1998] Born out of Sega's darkest hour to decide whether the company stays in the hardware business. Even though it didn't officially last long in the US, it was continued selling in Japan and spawned some great 2D Japanese shooters.

Somewhere around 2008 my grandparents bought a brand new Plasma tv, and me and my cousin used to play virtual cop on it with the light gun. up until recently I didn’t realize the light gun is only supposed to work with CRT TVs so I thought nothing of it. Well now I’m wondering how that was even possible and if anyone on here could explain it. I want to say the TV was a Panasonic but I’m really not sure because unfortunately my grandparents are the type of people that just get rid of their current TV when they get a new one.
