Master System is underrated

I grew up playing Nintendo so I never owned a Master System as a child. Now that I'm an adult in my mid thirties, I'm surprised how good games on the console play and look. I realize that Nintendo dominated the gaming market back then but why wasn't this console more successful? If it wasn't for the library of games that have no comparison to the NES, I can honestly say that the master System was superior
