How Do You Bend Component Legs?

I bought this tool from APAR, and, unless I'm doing it wrong (totally possible), it's not much help in making tight bends when bending component legs (because most parts, like resistors, are too big to fit in the center groove).

Am I doing this wrong? Is there a better tool or method?
