Partners old dreamcast giving out mid game?

disks boot up, games are playable for a bit before it sounds like the disc motor gives out and returns us to the system menu.

is this a laser issue? happens pretty fast on a backup of jet grind radio, and after an extended amount of time with official copy of space channel 5.
