cronjob not playing audio through USB speaker

Had some alarms to play during the day in the office. Had been running fine for years.

Upgraded this Pi to latest 64bit version of Raspbian last week. (full reinstall), using the Desktop version.

​

I can play files via terminal using..

​

aplay /home/user/soundfile.wav

​

When I try to launch it using cronjob, no audio plays.

​

Any pointers?
