Selling a PlayStation online, is there a good/valid reason why someone would ask to see the console serial number

I'm selling a PS3 online. A potential buyer asked to see the serial #. Is there a valid/good reason why someone would want to this? Can someone do something harmful with this info? And to clarify it's my launch unit console manufactured in 06. I have no issues giving a serial # provided i know there is no risk to me handing over this info before a sale.
