Is the slim really that much worse?

So i have been advised to avoid the slim at all costs because it scratches discs much more frequently than the fat ps2. Is it really that common of an issue though?

Both are available from a local shop for the same price. The main reason I'm asking this is because I've got very limited room to put another console so the slim would be more ideal but if it's going to ruin my discs it would be a waste of money.
