Conveyor Belt with Sensor

Hi all, to increase a part of my works production process I am looking into some automation and I think raspberry pi could be the solution. However I am new to raspberry pi.

So we have a conveyor belt which needs to stop when an object is detected and then activate another machine. After the conveyor needs to continue to the next object.

I assume that a sensor or camera connected to a raspberry pi, which is connected to the conveyor and other machinery, can operate this? Or is this not feasible?

I am assuming the other machinery would be compatible with the raspberry pi, it may not be but for arguments sake at the minute we can assume it does.

Any help/ideas would be appreciated?
