Should I be able to move the laser assembly manually?

Post by /gamecube »

Bought a GameCube off eBay but it didn’t work…tried to change the laser power but no dice. I’d like to try to fix it but I’m hoping someone can help troubleshoot.
I can verify the disc spins, but it’s very loud as it tries to read it before giving a “no discâ€￾ error. I also tried to manually nudge the laser sled, shut the lid, and see if it moved but it seems pretty stiff. Is that indicative of a problem? I got it to move a couple of mm but I’m not sure if that rules out the sled mechanism being broken.
Trying to figure out if I just need to buy a replacement laser, or the whole assembly.
