Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Will Block Players With Prepaid Phones

Post by PlayStationLifestyle »

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer will apparently have the same phone number restrictions that recently caused a stir in the Overwatch 2 community. For those who haven’t been following the game, Overwatch 2 instituted SMS Protect, which is a system that requires players to input their phone number to play. SMS Protect being wonky aside, unfortunately, those with VoIP or prepaid phones aren’t eligible to sign up. It has now emerged that Modern Warfare 2 will use the same system.
[h=2]Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer eligibility revealed[/h]As spotted by folks over at PC Gamer, Battle.net states that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Overwatch 2, and new Modern Warfare accounts all require a phone number to play. This comes with the following limitations:
  • Messaging apps like iMessage (iOS) or WhatsApp (iOS, Android) are not supported.
  • Mobile phones with prepaid plans may not work with the phone notification service.
  • Phone notifications cannot be used with Voice over IP (VoIP), and VoIP numbers that are transferred to a local provider are not eligible for the service.
While Overwatch 2 is free-to-play, Call of Duty games aren’t. So if you have a prepaid phone or live in a country that isn’t officially supported, you might want to reconsider your purchase.
