Black Mice in Yoshi's Island

Hey all, so today I was playing a little Yoshi's Island and discovered a new secret area that I had never seen before, which featured these black mice that don't show up anywhere else in the game. I have been playing this game since it was released, so my mind was blown to have found a somewhat new enemy in a game I have 100%ed dozens of times. Did other people know about this? Any ideas why these guys weren't incorporated into any other levels, and instead just exist in this obscure bonus room?
