Will a lower current device ruin a Pi?

Post by /RaspberryPi »

First time working on a Raspberry Pi project, and realizing that I am lacking the EE knowledge needed. I'm trying to build a temperature controlled fan. I found these instructions, which seem pretty good, but I'm struggling with finding a 12V fan that is also 600mA. All the fans I am finding are lower wattage, aka lower current. Do I need to worry about damaging the Pi if I use a lower wattage fan?
Also, is there a good kit (I already have a Raspberry Pi 2) that gives things like wires, transistors, etc? Trying to buy 1 diode, 1 transistor, 1 resistor, and a few wires is painful.
Thanks in advance!
