Inherited a PAL Megadrive 1, powers on but nothing happens

Hi,
I’ve inherited a PAL Megadrive 1, the original owner said it didn’t work anymore. It only came with the RF cable, I still have a CRT but I’ve lost my remote so I can’t tune it into the TV to see what was wrong. I did however plug a pair of headphones into the headphone jack and powered it on, no matter what game I inserted I got no sound.
I’ve opened it up and had a look under the metal shielding without removing it, none of the caps appear to be bulging. I saw an article on ifixit’s page saying to use a nail file on the cartridge port and blow out the debri with compressed air, using a nail file sounds crazy to me but a lot of people have said it worked for them.
Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.
