Raspberry Pi as a chromecast

There are a lot of tutorials available that were written a few years back showing you how to make your Pi act like a chromecast device. You could download Raspicast on your android and cast to the Pi. I tried following a couple of these tutorials, but hit brick walls due to outdated software, specifically omxiv/openmax or whatever.
Is something like this still possible with, for example, VLC? Which is much more advanced in comparison.
