How do I record audio from the 3.5mm jack output of another device (phone/tablet) with the raspberry pi?

The Raspberry Pi is a series of credit card-sized single-board computers developed in the United Kingdom by the Raspberry Pi Foundation to promote the teaching of basic computer science in schools and developing countries.

I looked it up and I found that a 3.5 mm male to male cable can't be used as the 3.5mm jack on the Pi doesn't support audio input.
If I use one of those 3.5 mm to USB converters, (3.5mm plugged in the tablet/phone and USB end into the Pi) will the Pi recognise it as an audio input ? like a USB microphone? Does it convert the analog signal from phone 3.5mm jack to digital?
